2nd Guide Client Catches – Wild Winter Bass

Yep, it’s been rather wild of late! Heavy rain, Gale Force winds, and some difficulty getting through the south Devon lanes at times! However, the plus side is that, as it has remained very mild, the sea temperatures are still in the high 11s along our illustrious coastline and her many magnificent waterways.

What this means though, is that there are seemingly a lot of bass still sniffing around the shoreline to keep Joe busy (I’ve completed my guiding for 2025 as you would have seen from my previous post here) and he is doing a fantastic job of placing them onto his clients’ lures.

Winter bass are generally of a greater than average size to the rest of the year, meaning that if you hook one, it’ll be a good one such as this 58cm fish that snaffled a Megabass Sleeper Craw.

With an explicit requirement to be ‘taught in the way of the creature baits’, Joe’s three clients had to endure some pretty horrific downpours, squalls, and high winds from all directions following the journey down all the way from Kent. Thankfully, these guys were very, very keen and actually embraced the conditions according to Joe.

Our clients are routinely asking us to teach them the ‘how, when, and where’ to use a particular lure type – which in this case was the creature baits.

With the intention to take their newly taught skills (not only in regards to technique, but also the exceedingly specific types of environments in which Joe and I have succeeded with the creature bait lures) back to the south-east, their patience and outright effort was ultimate rewarded with three fine winter bass of 50cm, 58cm, and another of 58cm.

The 2nd 58cm bass of this session in the (very heavy) rain, and the 3rd to fall to the charms of the Sleeper Craw – these lures know no boundaries!

A massive shout out to Joe here. Guiding three people who you’ve never met within tough weather conditions is not easy, especially when numerous ‘bites and hits’ were experienced prior to the catches with no bass to show for it. To remain genuinely positive when things are going against you as a guide is the hall mark of true professional.
