My Client Catches – Doing the ‘DoLive’

The OSP DoLive Stick. What a lure!

I have written a number of posts and articles highlighting the virtues of this classic ‘Soft Twitch Bait’ over the years, and for good reason – they consistently place bass on the shoreline… To read two of the most pertinent of them you can follow the links below:

The recent captures of bass measuring 60 cm and 63cm respectively for my clients Ian and Rob (above) are the inspiration for this post – one that I hope reinvigorates ‘the love’ out there in the bass lure fishing world for what I believe can be both ‘an oblivious fish’ and/or an ‘overpowered fish’ imitation…

The 60cm bass below was hooked right on the edge of thick weedy margins, along which both my 2nd Guide Joe and I have witnessed numerous bass cruising along at various stages of the tide. Small fish, such as mullet and sand smelt in particular love to harbour amongst this type of structure for concealment, in addition to mitigating the risk of being pushed around by the current or waves.

The Audio Clip below covers my interpretation of ‘Oblivious’ small fish or fry behaviour:

A 60cm bass landed by someone I call Mr Dolive Stick due to his level of consistency with these lures while under my stewardship on the 3 Day Packages he attends two or three times a year.

Next up, is what I would describe as the ‘Overpowered’ notion in relation to immature fish movement, one that I will describe in the Audio Clip below the photograph of a rather covered up Ian – the Sun was baking down that day it has to be said!

This 63cm bass swiped the DoLive Stick just off the rod tip, in what some fairly murky and fast flowing water following a switch from the Creature Bait Ian was initially using, but that was ‘tumbling’ along the seabed due the pace of the tide – a timely switch as it turned out!

A 63cm bass for my client Ian, caught under extremely bright and sunny conditions as you can see, within a rapidly increasing flow of current.

I always say to my clients that “when bass lure fishing, you are attempting to make a bass aware of a lure, without making it appear to obvious!” This is the fine line, and indeed a tight rope that you walk along when hunting and fishing for these mercurial predators, and I genuinely think that its subtlety is one of the primary reasons why the OSP DoLive Stick is so effective.

To learn ‘How’ to catch bass on lures within all of the environments and conditions in which you will encounter this spellbinding species, my three books will undoubtedly help.
