2nd Guide Client Catches – Picking the Right Line…

What on earth is Marc on about this time some of you may ask? And no, this isn’t a post about braided mainline, but rather another post designed to assist the reader at becoming a better, and a more consistent bass lure angler…

Something that has become very apparent over the past four or five years of guiding within some of Devon’s finest waterways is just how often ‘the fish’ will take a certain ‘line’ when transiting the channels and margins…

Now, when I say ‘fish’, there is no doubt in my mind that any mullet swimming along what I believe will be a predetermined trajectory will essentially ‘reveal or giveaway’ the potential track of the bass also. For not only is it well-known that bass will travel with mullet as a form or camouflage or to use them as an ‘alarm system’, they will often just tag along behind them, and therefore, will be using the momentum of the flow just like their sleeker and more slippery cousins love to do.

So what creates or influences this trajectory? In my experience it will be where the current is naturally pushing up against the foreshore, or where there is a section of enhanced flow. Furthermore, if this route happens to swish through, over, or around some natural (or man-made) features, then this will most definitely appeal to our quarry – the wonderfully mesmerising bass!

The Xorus Patchinko 100 in Ghost Lancon – a pattern I’d advised Joe’s client (Sam) should purchase ahead of the session with him after he’d asked the question: should I bring any specific lures Marc?

A kink in the channel, alongside a section of bladderwrack fringing the outer-edge of where the current was gently pushing into where Joe (my 2nd Guide at South Devon Bass Guide) had positioned his eager client (Sam) was the setting.

And armed with the inimitable Patchinko 100 (the classic bait fish scattering imitation in my opinion) aimed along the same line again and again, cast after cast, and retrieve after retrieve, as the mullet cruised by and mini-bass snapped at it, this brilliant lure quickly found its intended target!

A new PB bass for Sam at 58cm. You can see what it meant to him too. Note the bladderwrack margins in the background…

Trust. That word again… This is something the client must have in the person stood advising him, in addition to being able to execute ‘the plan’ via casting in the correct place and working the lure in the correct manner – all achieved of course while under the instruction of the guide.

And via the catches Joe has achieved with his clients over the past 15 months and his growing client base as a result of this, he has well and truly earned the trust that returning clients such as Sam place in him. He’s doing a fantastic job I’m sure you’ll agree.

Off you go… See you next year when you’re a 60!

What a beautiful bass. Many congratulations Sam. And very well done Joe! Enjoy your well-earned 2 week holiday mate!!!
