As you may have already recognised, and that will become even more apparent over the coming series of blog posts, is that it has been a very good season at South Devon Bass Guide Ltd. However, up until a couple of weeks ago there was something still missing from the marvellous array of catches that my clients have accumulated in 2024 – the wonderful achievement that is a 70cm+ bass.
Yep, from a guiding perspective I had been ‘stuck’ on a dozen of these beauties for a while therefore, I was exceptionally happy to help my client (Tim) achieve a personal angling milestone that I know he is exceptionally proud of. What’s more, it will be interesting to see how long it takes to hook, land, and release number fourteen of what is a special fish, one that can only really be bettered by the Holy Grail that is a ‘double’ on a lure from the shore – something I have only achieved once myself with a 83cm, 12lb 2oz animal back in late-autumn 2021.

Off the top too!!!!
When I trawl through the previous twelve 70cm+ bass that my clients have landed since 2017, a number of characteristics become noticeable:
- More have been landed in darkness (8) than in daylight (5).
- Three have been landed on hard, needlefish lures.
- Nine have been landed on soft plastics: including the Wave Worm Bamboo Stick (2), Albie Snax (1), OSP DolIve Stick (1), Megabass Spindle Worm (1), Keitech Easy Shiner (1), and Savage Gear Gravity Stick (3)
What you may have realised though, is that none of the above were caught on a surface lure… Well, that was blown out of the water (literally) by Tim’s magnificent 70cm stunner, a fish that would have weighed in the region of 8lb, when it arrowed in on his delicately ‘popped and paused’ Tackle House Feed Popper – yes, that lure again!
