Client Catches – Once you ‘Pop’ you just can’t stop…!

I keep promising to write ‘short and succinct’ blog posts, but it just goes against my nature! However, I also have to admit that I have failed miserably to keep these pages up to date with all of the wonderful bass that my clients have been catching this season – one that is shaping up nicely as one of my best incidentally…

So the next half-a-dozen posts will be compact affairs I’m afraid, as I embark on what is traditionally one of the busiest, and most fruitful periods in the year for catching bass on lures here in south Devon, and indeed, and all around the country as the nights draw in, and mini-bass disperse to leave behind a much better average size of fish – even more so when you attach the seemingly ‘magic’ surface poppers!

A clients’ bass, landed on a Tackle House Feed Popper – with a little help from his Major Craft Seabass Custom ‘Marc Cowling’ Edition (here).

I’ve been enjoying A LOT of success with the surface poppers this season, more especially during the late-summer and early-autumn both within my personal endeavours and my guided sessions. Therefore, it was with a great deal of confidence that I suggested to Matt (a client how has been exceptionally ‘unlucky’ with me during his previous sessions) that he should stick with the Tackle House Feed Popper100 I’d fetched out of my own lure box as “it will sort out the bigger ones.”

And as dusk fell practically into darkness and the Moon began to illuminate our surroundings, although it took three or four swipes at the ‘popped and paused’ lure before a firm contact was achieved, it made what had been a tough session into another memorable one! 56cm, and Matt’s largest of what has been a pretty good season for him so far was landed and subsequently released within an hour of this method being introduced to him.

It all sounds familiar doesn’t it? Indeed, my recent post (So you’d like to target the big ones?) described an event whereby a ‘popped’ Whiplash Factory Spittin Wire was snaffled by a 67cm beast within minutes of me teaching it! But although Matt’s bass wasn’t in this category, the way in which it bent his Major Craft Seabass Custom Marc Cowling Edition had me scrambling for the net alright – and just as well too as the hooks ‘fell out’ once the line fell slack!

Well done Matt – mission accomplished at last! Note the glare of the moon on the water in the top right of the photograph – it really was that late into dusk!
